LIB DEMS CONFIRMED AS CHALLENGERS FOR MID WORCESTERSHIRE
Liberal Democrats are challenging the Conservatives in all 11 County Council divisions in Mid-Worcestershire in the elections on May 5 th. The Labour Party is out of the running as shown by the fact that they are only putting up 4 candidates, all in the Droitwich area.
Margaret Rowley, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Mid-Worcestershire, said at her adoption meeting in Evesham Public Hall on Saturday
“It is clear that Tony Blair has lost the trust of the British people. Conversations on the doorsteps, and our own surveys show that Labour, and particularly Tony Blair, is deeply unpopular. This is confirmed by the fact that Labour can only find candidates for a third of the County Divisions in the constituency.
“Mid-Worcestershire is now a two horse race between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives.
“With the extremely unpopular cuts made by the Conservatives locally to pensioners’ travel concessions, closure of some special schools and middle schools in Wyre Forest, and the decision to demolish Droitwich Lido, local people have had a taste of what Tory spending cuts mean. And yet Council Tax continues to rise in Worcestershire.
“More and more people are turning to the Liberal Democrats. We offer a real alternative with our promises of the fairer Local Income Tax; cutting primary school class sizes and student tuition fees; free personal care and increased pensions for the elderly. We promise to do this with only one tax increase, on individual incomes of over £100,000 a year.”
Constituency Chairman Robert Woodthorpe Browne, who is Liberal Democrat candidate in Tony Blair’s constituency of Sedgefield, said “We are looking forward to the general election and expect to see many more Liberal Democrat MPs returned to parliament this year.”
Local Party members voted unanimously to adopt Margaret as Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate.
