FIGHT TO SAVE DROITWICH SPA LIDO

Droitwich’s unique salt water lido will be demolished.   Wychavon District Council’s ruling Conservative Executive Board has unanimously voted not to support the proposals drawn up by the ‘Save a Lido Today’ (SALT) Group.

The Council’s Overview & Scrutiny Committee is meeting in the town’s Community Hall in Heritage Way on Wednesday 16th at 6:15pm and will listen to comments from representatives of the campaign group and members of the public.

Cllr Margaret Rowley,   Leader of the Opposition, said   “ In a recent survey undertaken by the Council itself 79% of people in the Droitwich area wanted to see the Lido restored.

“Before Wychavon’s Conservative ruling group closed the Lido in 2000 the young and not so young were able to enjoy sunbathing by the pool, having a dip in the naturally salty water to cool off.   Younger children were able to splash in the paddling pool.   People came from Birmingham as well as Droitwich Spa and the surrounding area.

“The Lido has tremendous potential, following some refurbishment, to again become a tourist attraction.   The Council has capital funding available from recent town centre developments which must be spent on leisure facilities in Droitwich Spa.   This was an ideal project.”

Town and District Councillor Graham Gopsill, who has been working with SALT,   paid tribute to the work they had carried out.   “SALT has worked very hard at drawing up plans for the Lido and are to be congratulated on their efforts.   We have been working with them on Droitwich Spa Town Council, and they deserve the support of Wychavon. The Executive Board seems to have forgotten that the Council is there to provide services for the community.”

A final decision will be made at a full council meeting in Pershore on 22 nd February.
