TORY U-TURN ON DROITWICH LIDO GIVEN CAUTIOUS WELCOME
Cllr Margaret Rowley has given a cautious welcome to plans put forward at the eleventh hour by Wychavon Executive Board. An uncosted outline plan was tabled at last night’s meeting.
“The scheme contains a number of features which we welcome. It appears to retain the original 1930’s building and shows a café, sunbathing area and a water play feature with an option to add a health spa at a later date. Key to the success of the area would be the pool.
“A swimming pool is shown but the size was not given, nor was there any assurance that salt water would be used. Although it was said that the pool would be heated, no cover was shown. The sand area shown next to the pool is likely to cause problems with clouding the water.
“No indication was given as to how much the scheme would cost. Running costs are likely to be at least as high as those of the SALT scheme, but at least there is an opportunity for more discussion.”
Cllr Graham Gopsill added. “The Executive Board has hastily had some plans drawn up in time for the election. This could have been done before the Lido was closed. The pool must be large enough to swim in. It is likely to be very popular and get overcrowded.
“It is vital that Droitwich people still turn out to vote in the Parish Poll on the Lido arranged for April 28 th. There is no guarantee that this scheme will be carried out, and it may well turn out to be little more than a paddling pool.”
